Pakistan Wins Global Award for Sustainable Panda Bond

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has received international recognition for its first-ever Sustainable Panda Bond, winning the Pioneer Sustainable Sovereign Panda Bond Issuer Award at the 2026 APAC Climate Bonds Awards.

The award recognises Pakistan’s inaugural CNY1.75 billion Sustainable Development Panda Bond, issued in May 2026 as part of efforts to diversify the country’s financing sources and gain access to China’s capital market.

Adviser to the Finance Minister Khurram Schehzad said the three-year bond was issued at a 2.5 percent coupon rate and attracted investor demand exceeding five times the issue size.

The strong response helped Pakistan access a new pool of institutional investors and diversify its sovereign financing sources, while also strengthening financial links between Pakistan and China.

Pakistan’s inaugural issuance was supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) through credit-enhancement guarantees.

The proceeds from the bond are being used to finance sustainable and socially inclusive projects in key sectors including water, energy and health.

The ADB said the issuance would support projects focused on water governance, energy reliability and efficiency, and healthcare capacity, alongside broader sustainable and climate-resilient infrastructure development.

The successful Panda Bond issuance has opened a new channel for Pakistan to access China’s onshore capital market and broaden its international investor base.

The Finance Ministry has described the transaction as an important development in Pakistan-China financial cooperation, while the government has indicated that the new Panda Bond programme could provide a platform for future issuances.

The award adds international recognition to Pakistan’s debut in the renminbi bond market and highlights the country’s growing use of diversified, market-based financing for sustainable development.
