KPT-Pipri Rail Link Revamp Planned Under PM Task Force Reforms

KARACHI: The government has launched measures under the Prime Minister’s Task Force reforms to improve railway and port infrastructure and make cargo transportation from Karachi’s ports more efficient.

The planned rehabilitation of the Karachi Port Trust (KPT)-Pipri Rail Link includes the construction of a 52-kilometre dedicated dual-track railway line.

According to the project details, 25 major railway and road bridges will be constructed along the route.

The plan also includes six flyovers and grade separators to improve the movement of rail and road traffic and reduce congestion at key crossings.

The railway corridor will have 100 percent perimeter fencing and enhanced security arrangements.

A modern centralised automated signalling system will also be installed to improve train operations and safety.

The project includes a 1.5-kilometre dedicated railway link connecting the logistics park with Karachi Port and Port Qasim.

Under the proposed system, containers arriving at the ports will be transported by rail to the logistics park.

From there, the containers will be transferred onto trailers for onward transportation to upcountry destinations.

The planned rail connection is aimed at strengthening the link between Pakistan’s major ports and the national logistics network.

Greater use of rail for container transportation could help improve cargo movement, reduce pressure on roads and enhance the efficiency of port operations.

The project is part of wider government efforts to modernise port and railway infrastructure, improve logistics and strengthen Pakistan’s trade and freight transportation system.
