Unilateral System of Imposing Demands Through Force and Pressure Has Ended: Bagher Ghalibaf

TEHRAN: Iranian Parliament Speaker Bagher Ghalibaf has said the unilateral global system of imposing demands through force and pressure has come to an end.

In a statement, Ghalibaf stressed the need to defend multilateralism and respect for the rule of law in international affairs.

He said China and Russia had rejected the politicisation of the United Nations Security Council and reaffirmed the importance of respecting the rule of law.

Ghalibaf said unilateral approaches to international affairs served the interests of no country.

He called for strengthening the multilateral system and said international disputes should be addressed through law, mutual respect and multilateral cooperation, rather than coercion and pressure.

According to the Iranian parliament speaker, countries should work through international mechanisms to resolve disputes and avoid actions that undermine established legal and diplomatic frameworks.

Ghalibaf referred to the positions of Beijing and Moscow as examples of resistance to what he described as the political use of international institutions.

He said the current global environment required greater cooperation among states and stronger adherence to international law.

The Iranian speaker’s remarks come amid wider disagreements among major powers over the role of the UN Security Council, international sanctions and the use of political and economic pressure in resolving international disputes.
