Pakistan Wins First Medal at Asian Games 2026 as Asim Khan Secures MMA Bronze

Pakistan has won its first medal at the Asian Games 2026, with Karachi-based mixed martial arts fighter Asim Khan securing a bronze medal in the men’s Modern 60kg category.

Asim Khan faced Tajikistan’s Mirzobek Umarov in the MMA semi-final but suffered a 3-0 defeat. Under the Asian Games rules, both losing semi-finalists are awarded bronze medals, ensuring Asim Khan a place on the podium.

The achievement is particularly significant as mixed martial arts has been included in the Asian Games for the first time in 2026. As a result, Asim Khan has become Pakistan’s first MMA medallist in Asian Games history.

Asim Khan had earlier defeated Cambodia’s Sopanha Pheng 3-0 in the quarter-final to book his place in the last four.

His quarter-final victory also guaranteed Pakistan at least a bronze medal in the MMA competition.

Dilawar Khan, who is accompanying the Pakistani team as team leader, described Asim Khan’s achievement as an important development for the national contingent.

He said Pakistan had won a medal in MMA during its first participation in the sport at the Asian Games, describing the achievement as a significant milestone for Pakistani mixed martial arts.

According to Dilawar Khan, the participation of professional-level fighters made the competition highly challenging, but Asim Khan demonstrated his abilities in a difficult contest.

The bronze medal is Asim Khan’s first medal at the Asian Games.

He has previously achieved success at international level, including an Asian silver medal and a world bronze medal, adding to his record in international MMA competitions.

Pakistan’s performance in other events at the Asian Games has so far been mixed.

In the 50-metre freestyle swimming, Pakistan’s Hamza Asif finished second in his heat. However, he placed 30th overall in the event.

Pakistan also faced difficulties in the mixed triathlon final. The Pakistani athletes competed in swimming, cycling and running, but Ali Hassan could not complete the competition within the required conditions, resulting in the team being recorded as NDF.

Pakistani coach Abdul Ghaffar Gujjar expressed satisfaction with the athletes’ efforts, saying the competitors had performed according to their abilities and would seek improved results in upcoming events.

Pakistan also faced challenging matches in the soft tennis mixed doubles competition.

The Pakistani pair suffered defeats against opponents from Chinese Taipei, South Korea and the Philippines.

In the women’s table tennis team event, Pakistan also lost its group-stage match against traditional rival India.

Pakistan is participating in several sports at the Asian Games, and Asim Khan’s bronze medal is currently the first major success for the national contingent.

His achievement has provided an early podium finish for Pakistan and added to hopes of further medals in other events during the Games.
