Iranian Media Says US Insisted on New York Meeting With Iranian Delegation

NEW YORK: Iranian state media has said the meeting between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff in New York took place at the insistence of the American side.

Iranian state broadcaster IRIB said Araghchi conveyed Tehran’s conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz during the discussions held on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly.

According to Iranian state media, Tehran’s conditions include the immediate lifting of the US naval blockade, the release of frozen Iranian assets and an end to the war on all resistance fronts.

The meeting came as the strategic waterway remained at the centre of the US-Iran confrontation and international efforts to restore maritime traffic.

Iranian officials have also indicated that the country could consider reopening the Strait of Hormuz if US military pressure and the blockade were eased.

The meeting between Araghchi and Witkoff followed a wider round of diplomatic contacts involving regional mediators.

US officials have described the broader discussions as productive, while Trump said another meeting was expected in the near future.

The latest contacts represent continued diplomatic engagement despite ongoing disagreements over military pressure, sanctions, nuclear issues and maritime security.
