US-Iran Contacts Continue Through Mediators, Steve Witkoff Says

NEW YORK: Diplomatic contacts between the United States and Iran continued through mediators in New York on the sidelines of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff said.

Witkoff said on social media platform X that communication between the US and Iranian delegations continued throughout the day through intermediaries.

He said one round of discussions had been completed and expressed hope that the talks would prove constructive and positive.

Witkoff clarified that the discussions were not being held through direct negotiations between the two delegations.

Instead, mediators were carrying messages between the American and Iranian sides as part of the diplomatic process.

He said the mediators would continue their efforts but did not provide details about the issues discussed.

The latest contacts come as diplomatic efforts to address the continuing US-Iran confrontation have intensified during the UN General Assembly.

President Donald Trump has also described the recent discussions as positive, while Iranian officials have indicated that diplomatic engagement remains possible despite continuing differences.

The talks are taking place amid disagreements over issues including the Strait of Hormuz, the conflict, US military pressure and Iran’s conditions for resolving the confrontation.

Iranian officials have previously linked the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to conditions concerning US military pressure and other aspects of the conflict.

However, no final agreement or announcement on ending the conflict has been made so far.

According to Witkoff, further diplomatic contacts could take place through the mediators as efforts continue to find a possible path toward resolving the dispute.
