Pezeshkian to Fox News; Iran Never Chose War, America Must Decide Whether to End It

NEW YORK: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said Iran did not choose war with the United States and remains prepared to move forward with an agreement, arguing that the decision to end the conflict now rests with Washington.

In an interview with Fox News, Pezeshkian said Iran was forced into the conflict and did not seek confrontation with the United States.

He said Iran’s Supreme Leader, scientists and military commanders had been killed during the conflict, but Tehran still wanted to pursue a negotiated settlement.

Pezeshkian said the basic principles of an agreement had already been discussed and that Iran was prepared to move forward on the basis of the agreement previously reached with the administration of US President Donald Trump.

He said the issues under discussion fell within the framework of international law and that Iran was seeking what it considers its legitimate rights under international law.

“We do not wish to continue,” Pezeshkian said in the interview, adding that the United States would have to decide whether it wanted to bring the conflict to an end.

Pezeshkian said Tehran had not sought anything beyond what it considers its legal rights and remained interested in reaching an agreement.

He also rejected the suggestion that Iran directs the actions of the Houthi militia, saying the group does not receive instructions from Tehran.

The Iranian president acknowledged that Iran was facing economic difficulties but said the country would remain intact despite the pressure.

His remarks came as US and Iranian officials continue efforts through diplomatic channels to explore possible arrangements for ending the conflict. Recent discussions have included a phased framework involving the Strait of Hormuz and US economic restrictions on Iran.
