Donald Trump’s Iran gamble shifts toward finding a way out

01 October, 2026 13:14

For years, Washington operated on the assumption that military force and economic pressure could push Iran into submission. Donald Trump repeatedly said that a confrontation with Iran would be short, decisive and devastating for Tehran.

He claimed Iran would collapse within days and eventually seek a deal on US terms. However, the course of the conflict did not develop as quickly as Washington had expected.

Before the war began, Trump and his advisers spoke confidently about the US military advantage over Iran.

The White House appeared to underestimate Iran’s defense capabilities, strategic depth and regional alliances. Washington believed it could launch attacks without facing serious consequences.

The US and Israel presented the conflict as one in which their military power would give them a clear advantage.

Trump repeatedly said that Iran was close to collapse and that maximum pressure and military action could weaken its regional alliances.

US military planners also appeared to expect that the Persian Gulf, Red Sea and wider West Asian airspace would remain open to US military operations.

However, Iran had spent decades developing its defense systems, ballistic missile capabilities and military preparedness.

Instead of a quick outcome, the United States faced a conflict involving a heavily prepared opponent.

As the fighting intensified, Iran responded with missile strikes and other military actions. The conflict also affected important maritime routes, including the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s regional allies and partners, including groups in Lebanon and Yemen, also remained involved in the wider conflict.

The fighting created wider economic concerns, including disruptions to energy supplies and increased pressure on economies in Western countries.

The developments also created a sharp contrast between Trump’s earlier statements and Washington’s later diplomatic efforts.

The US administration began using diplomatic channels, regional intermediaries and other efforts to reduce tensions and limit the wider impact of the conflict.

The signing of the Islamabad Memorandum and continued efforts to reach maritime understandings reflected Washington’s attempts to manage the consequences of the conflict.

Although Trump continued to use strong rhetoric over maritime areas, Washington also pursued diplomatic options to reduce tensions and find a way forward.

The conflict showed that military action alone could not quickly settle the dispute between the United States and Iran.

Trump entered the conflict saying that the US could pressure Iran through military and economic measures. As the conflict continued, Washington faced the consequences of the fighting and increased pressure to find diplomatic ways to reduce the confrontation.
