Another Attack on Muslims’ Religious Freedom in Modi-Ruled Kashmir
A proposal to introduce common topics for Friday prayer sermons in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir has drawn strong criticism from political leaders and Muslim religious groups.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said in a post on X that the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) interference in Muslim religious affairs was unacceptable and would not be tolerated.
According to The Indian Gazette, the Mutahida Majlis Ulema also criticised the proposal, calling it ridiculous and saying that Muslims in Jammu and Kashmir would never accept it.
Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti compared the move to the proposed Uniform Civil Code and described Jammu and Kashmir as a testing ground for the BJP, the publication reported.
Political observers said the government would not succeed in suppressing the Kashmiri freedom movement by restricting the religious freedoms of Muslims in the region.
