Audit Report Flags Rs920 Million in Alleged Irregularities Under PTI’s 13-Year Rule in KP
PESHAWAR: Rs920 Million in Alleged Financial Irregularities Reported in KP Education Department During PTI Rule.
Alleged financial irregularities worth Rs920 million have been reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Education Department in a single year during the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government, raising concerns about the use of public money.
The reported irregularities occurred when Shahram Khan Tarakai was the provincial minister for Elementary and Secondary Education.
According to the findings, irregularities worth Rs374.3 million were identified in the distribution of tablets to newly recruited teachers hired through district education officers.
A total of Rs424.7 million was spent on distributing tablets to 15,000 people. A committee was formed to investigate the matter. However, the scrutiny committee’s report showed that only 1,779 tablets were returned to the Directorate, while the remaining 13,221 tablets could not be accounted for.
In a separate case, alleged irregularities worth Rs48.7 million were reported in paper purchases by the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE), Mardan, during the 2022–23 fiscal year.
The report also stated that awarding a contract to a favoured firm in violation of government rules allegedly caused a loss of Rs192 million to the public treasury.
In another case, the board chairman reportedly withdrew Rs7.1 million as an executive allowance despite not being eligible to receive it.
According to the audit report, the purchase of smartphones also allegedly caused a loss of Rs13 million to the public treasury.
The findings have raised questions about the use of public funds, the distribution of government assets and compliance with financial rules in the provincial education sector during the PTI government.
