Prince William Praises Karan Johar and Shows Interest in K3G

Prince William may soon be watching the Bollywood classic Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham after praising filmmaker Karan Johar and promising to check out his work following a journalist’s recommendation.

The Prince of Wales called Johar an “icon” and praised his efforts to help bring the Earthshot Prize to India. The conversation took place during an event connected to the environmental initiative, which William founded with The Royal Foundation.

The 54-year-old filmmaker has been helping the Earthshot Prize strengthen its presence in India. Speaking to BBC Asian Network about meeting Johar in London, William described the experience as “really cool” and praised the filmmaker for his support.

“Really cool. I mean, he’s again an icon, and he’s been so helpful in kind of being able to help the Earthshot prize land, well, in India. We want to make it a truly Indian Earthshot Prize. It’s the biggest one we’ve done,” William said.

He also described Johar as “modest.” When the journalist asked whether he had watched any of the filmmaker’s movies, William admitted that he had not seen his work yet.

“No, he’s being very modest. But I’m sure as time goes on, he’ll introduce some more films to me,” the Prince said.

The journalist then mentioned Johar’s 2001 family drama Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, widely known as K3G. The film features a star-studded cast, like Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor Khan.

“Yeah, we all say K3G anyway. If you meet Karan again, ‘Tell him, I’m going to watch your film K3G, he’ll love you,’” the journalist told William.

The Prince agreed to pass on the message, replying, “Okay got it, I’ll mention that too when I see him.”

Meanwhile, the Earthshot Prize Summit will bring together representatives from business, environmental innovation, funding organisations and community groups to discuss solutions to environmental challenges.

The summit will lead up to the sixth Earthshot Prize Awards Night on November 17, 2026. Fifteen finalists will be recognised at the event, while five winners will each receive £1 million to help expand their environmental solutions.
