Historic Delhi Mosque Faces Eviction Order, Muslim Leaders Demand Protection

The Indian authorities have reportedly issued a six-day eviction notice to the historic Race Course Mosque in New Delhi, triggering concerns among Muslim leaders and rights advocates over the protection of Islamic religious heritage. According to Kashmir Media Service (KMS), mosque representatives maintain that a 2021 government survey legally recognised the property, rejecting allegations of encroachment. The mosque’s imam also alleged that electricity and water connections were disconnected on October 7, 2026, despite repeated requests to the Delhi Waqf Board for protection over the past six months.
Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind has described the mosque as legally protected heritage and announced protests against what it characterises as state repression. The organisation has demanded the immediate suspension of the eviction notice, protection of the mosque and restoration of essential utilities. Kashmir’s Mirwaiz, Maulana Muhammad Umar Farooq, has also expressed concern over the reported failure of Waqf authorities to take effective measures to safeguard the historic place of worship. He questioned whether Muslim religious sites were increasingly becoming vulnerable in India, warning that the security of other mosques could also be at risk if legally recognised properties were not protected.
Political analysts cited by KMS have linked the controversy to broader concerns over India’s Waqf Amendment Act 2025, arguing that changes to the administration and registration of Waqf properties could weaken institutional autonomy and threaten Muslim religious heritage. They have also alleged that hundreds of mosques, seminaries and shrines have been demolished in recent years, citing examples in Saharanpur, Mehrauli, Varanasi and Ujjain. The claims of widespread demolitions and legal violations remain matters requiring independent verification. The dispute has intensified calls from Muslim organizations and rights advocates for legal safeguards, protection of minority religious sites and an end to actions they consider discriminatory.
