USA blocks UNSC statement condemning Israeli attacks in Gaza for third time
USA blocks UNSC statement condemning Israeli attacks in Gaza for third time.
A third United Nations Security Council emergency meeting in a week – amid the deadly Israeli offensive in Gaza – has again ended with no concrete outcome.
USA blocks UNSC statement
The meeting remained inconclusive because the United States of America blocked a joint statement calling for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
The United Nations Security Council members have failed to issue a statement calling for a de-escalation of Israeli-Palestinian violence for a third time, due to US opposition.
The members met on Sunday for the third time, following two meetings last week, to discuss the issue.
Multiple members say the United States opposed the issuance of a statement again after China, which currently holds the council’s presidency, compiled a revised draft based on member countries’ opinions.
In the previous two meetings, China proposed draft statements both times that urged Israel and Palestinians to ease tensions.
Furthermore, it expressed concerns about Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank.
The US, an ally of Israel, has a history of opposing statements and resolutions at the UN Security Council over Israeli-Palestinian conflicts.
The council is working to hold its fourth meeting on Tuesday.
The meeting on Sunday came after the US reportedly twice blocked over the last week resolutions that would have condemned Israel’s military response and called for a ceasefire.
Israeli airstrikes have killed over 200 Palestinians, including 58 children, in besieged Gaza enclave of over two million people.
