KARACHI: Engineers at NED University of Engineering and Technology have successfully completed the test drive of Pakistan’s first driverless car, powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The car, developed over the past year, is now operational on the roads of NED University and has impressed everyone with its performance.

The project was initiated by the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence (NCAI) at the Department of Computer Science and Information Technology. It began a year ago with the goal of creating a fully autonomous vehicle.

The driverless car, built using a Chinese-imported electric vehicle, uses AI, robotics, mapping, and sensor/vision technologies to navigate without human input.

Dr. Muhammad Khurram, the leader of the engineering team and Director of the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence, explained that the project has reached a mature stage after a year of development.

“We are now conducting trials and road tests, integrating radar technology and computer vision, as well as working on object detection, lane recognition, speed limit detection, and signal light recognition to make the car fully autonomous,” Dr. Khurram said.

Currently, the car’s speed is limited by its algorithm to 15-20 km/h. The car can make turns and detect oncoming traffic. Team member Inzamam Khan added that the vehicle was designed to handle Pakistan’s challenging and uncontrolled urban environment, with strong sensor technology capable of supporting this complex task.
