FBR extends income tax return filing deadline again

15 October, 2025 20:02

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has extended the deadline for filing income tax returns until October 31, according to sources on Wednesday.

This is the second extension, as the original deadline of September 30 was first moved to October 15. The new date aims to give taxpayers more time to complete their filings after several requests from the business community.

Extension made on traders’ requests

FBR officials said the extension came after appeals from traders and tax associations, who reported technical issues and workload pressures. The FBR acknowledged these problems and decided to provide extra time to ensure smooth filing and maximum compliance.

New deadline and filing warning

Taxpayers now have until October 31 to submit their income tax returns for the 2025 tax year. Officials warned that this will likely be the final extension, urging everyone to file on time to avoid fines or penalties.

Earlier, FBR had announced plans for a major crackdown on non-filers once the previous deadline expired. Officials had warned that no further extension would be granted and that enforcement actions would begin right after midnight.

Wealth show-offs under FBR’s radar

According to officials, FBR has increased monitoring of people who display wealth on social media, such as luxury cars, lavish houses, expensive jewellery, and designer clothing. Those frequently travelling abroad or spending heavily via credit cards are also being closely watched.

The crackdown also targets individuals who gift valuable items or throw cash at weddings, as such activities have drawn attention from authorities.

Social media tracking and next steps

FBR’s special monitoring team has collected data from social media to identify potential non-filers. Notices will be sent soon to those living luxurious lifestyles without declaring taxable income.

In the first phase, the FBR will target high-profile non-filers who own expensive properties and farmhouses. Officials warned that late filers would face extra taxes and penalties, urging all citizens to comply before the new deadline.
