LPG prices jump 42%, hitting households and rickshaw drivers reeling

12 June, 2026 15:04

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices in Pakistan have reached a record level, adding further strain on households already struggling with inflation and gas shortages.

The price of LPG has increased from Rs380 per kilogram to Rs540, marking a sharp rise of Rs160 or 42%. No official explanation has been given for the increase so far.

The hike comes just before the federal budget, at a time when inflation continues to reduce people’s purchasing power and natural gas supply remains inconsistent in many cities.

LPG has long been used as a cheaper alternative for cooking and heating, especially by low-income families who are not connected to the natural gas network. However, the latest price surge is putting that affordability under pressure.

The increase is also affecting rickshaw drivers, who depend on LPG to keep transport fares affordable. Many say the rising fuel cost is severely impacting their already limited earnings.

With fuel expenses climbing, drivers are warning that they may have no choice but to increase fares. This could further burden commuters and add to everyday living costs for the public.

Overall, the price hike is expected to have a ripple effect across households, transport services, and small businesses.
