Middle-earth is set to return to the big screen with The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, a new live-action prequel currently in development by Warner Bros.. The film marks a major cinematic comeback for the franchise, more than a decade after The Hobbit trilogy concluded.

The project was officially highlighted at CinemaCon 2026, where key casting details were revealed. Andy Serkis will reprise his iconic role as Gollum/Sméagol and also serve as the film’s director.

Returning fan-favorite cast members include Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins. From The Hobbit series, Lee Pace is set to reprise his role as Thranduil.

New additions to the cast include Kate Winslet, who will portray a mysterious character named Marigol, and Leo Woodall as Halvard, a newly created Ranger character. Meanwhile, Jamie Dornan will play a younger version of Aragorn, also known as Strider, a role previously made famous by Viggo Mortensen.

Although a full synopsis has not been officially released, the storyline will focus on Gollum’s untold journey within The Lord of the Rings timeline. The narrative is expected to take place between Bilbo’s birthday celebration and the events leading up to The Fellowship of the Ring.

The central plot revolves around the hunt for Gollum, with Gandalf and Aragorn tracking him across Middle-earth—an event that was previously referenced but never fully depicted in earlier films.

Fan reactions have already begun to surface online, with many expressing excitement over the return of beloved characters. The project is being described as a nostalgic reunion, while some fans are curious about how the new casting choices, particularly for Aragorn, will compare to earlier portrayals.
