Ted Lasso’s Shocking Comeback; Season 4 Episode 1 Ending Leaves Fans Emotional

05 August, 2026 11:36

Ted Lasso’s long-awaited fourth season premiered on Apple TV+ on August 5, 2026, roughly three years after the show’s previous installment, picking up with Ted having left England to build a new life back in Kansas. The season opener sets up his eventual return to coaching, driven by a visit from familiar faces and quiet family support.

The episode finds Ted working as a supermarket salesman, with son Henry approaching graduation and life outwardly settled alongside wife Michelle. But those closest to him sense something missing, setting up the arrival of Rebecca, Higgins, and Keeley in Kansas with an offer: come coach the Richmond Greyhounds’ women’s team. The proposal reconnects Ted with both his coaching expertise and the people who defined his years in England.

Though Ted initially prioritizes staying close to family, he ultimately decides to return to England — this time with backing from his mother, who recognizes he hasn’t been fulfilled since returning to the US. The episode adds a twist: Ted’s plan to bring his mother and son to London alongside Michelle turns out to have originated with Henry himself, reframing the decision as something the whole family quietly orchestrated rather than Ted choosing it alone.

Series creator and star Jason Sudeikis explained the season’s origins in a recent interview, describing the process as giving himself something meaningful to work toward — what he called filling up a big cup of ideas. He said the real turning point came when he brought the concept to co-creators Brendan Hunt and Joe Kelly, then to the writers’ room, and eventually to a pre-production retreat, testing the idea before anything was finalized.

Sudeikis acknowledged wrestling with self-doubt over whether reviving the show was the right call, saying he had to work through that uncertainty on his own first. Once the creative team signed on, he said he felt a responsibility not to let them down, which pushed the project forward.

He described the season’s structural premise with a Wizard of Oz comparison: the Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, and Scarecrow traveling to Kansas to bring Dorothy back to Oz — but with Ted still working through whether he’s doing something for himself, noting he becomes more willing to act when it seems like he’s doing it for others rather than his own benefit.

That framing sets up a central tension likely to run through the season: whether Ted’s return to coaching represents genuine personal growth toward prioritizing his own fulfillment, or another instance of the self-effacing pattern that defined his character across the show’s first three seasons. With only one episode released so far, subsequent installments will show how that tension plays out as Ted settles back into life with Richmond.
