Sony Raises PlayStation 5 Prices in U.S. Amid Market Recovery and Tariff Concerns

21 August, 2025 16:07

Sony (6758.T) announced on Wednesday that it will increase the prices of its PlayStation 5 consoles in the United States by around $50 starting Thursday, citing a slow recovery in the gaming market and the impact of U.S. tariffs on imports.

According to the company’s blog post, all three PS5 models will see the hike, with the high-end PS5 Pro now set to cost $749.99. This adjustment follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariff measures on imports from major manufacturing hubs, including China and Japan, raising concerns over supply chain costs and disruptions.

Earlier this year, Sony raised PS5 prices across several European markets, while rival Xbox also increased prices of its consoles and accessories in the U.S., Europe, Australia, and the UK.

Industry analysts had projected consoles to be a key driver of videogame market growth in 2025, especially with the release of premium titles like Take-Two Interactive’s “Grand Theft Auto VI” and Nintendo’s Switch 2. However, the postponement of GTA VI to next year, coupled with console price hikes, has cast doubts on growth momentum.

Sony confirmed that the latest changes only apply to U.S. markets, with no revisions in other regions. Additionally, prices of PlayStation 5 accessories will remain unchanged.
