Pakistan, Afghanistan agree to 48-hour ceasefire after Taliban request

15 October, 2025 17:50

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban have reached an agreement for a temporary 48-hour ceasefire, following a request from the Afghan Taliban regime, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) announced on Wednesday.

According to the Foreign Office, “At the request of the Afghan Taliban regime, and with mutual consent, Pakistan and the Taliban have agreed to a temporary ceasefire for 48 hours, effective from 6pm this evening.”

The statement added that during this period, both sides will hold constructive discussions to find a “positive and lasting solution” to the ongoing situation.

Earlier, the Pakistan Army carried out precision strikes on important Afghan Taliban strongholds in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, on Wednesday, according to security sources.

Sources said the targeted strikes destroyed the Taliban’s Battalion No. 4 and Border Brigade No. 6, killing dozens of Afghan and foreign militants.

At the same time, militants tried to enter Pakistan through the Turkmenzai border area in Mohmand district to launch terrorist attacks. However, the Pakistani forces quickly responded and stopped the infiltration attempt.

According to security officials, a large group sent from across the border was completely eliminated in Mohmand, where at least 30 militants were killed. They added that the Pakistan Army has full capability to deal with any external threats and the operation is still ongoing, with reports of more militant losses.

The sources also said that Pakistan’s strong and precise response has left the Afghan Taliban in panic, as they suffered heavy losses in men and equipment. In an attempt to hide their failures, the Taliban have been spreading false propaganda online.

One Taliban spokesperson shared a misleading post on social media, claiming that they had captured a T-55 tank from the Pakistan Army. However, security sources clarified that the tank shown in the video actually belongs to the Afghan Taliban themselves.

They added that Pakistan’s armed forces effectively repelled the Taliban’s aggression and remain fully determined to defend the country against any threat or misinformation.
