Pakistan Enters Second Phase of CPEC to Boost Regional Connectivity: PM

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced that Pakistan is entering the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), emphasizing that enhanced regional connectivity will bring a major boost to trade and economic growth.

Speaking at the closing session of the Regional Transport Ministers’ Conference on Friday, the prime minister welcomed delegates from across the region and said the conference provided an important platform for dialogue and cooperation.

He said the event is vital for strengthening bilateral and regional connectivity at a time when global transport and communication systems are rapidly evolving.

“Our region has long been a hub of connectivity under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The growing global economy has further increased the importance of this historic trade route,” the prime minister noted.

PM Shehbaz highlighted that Gwadar’s long coastline and Karachi’s port are key parts of the Maritime Silk Road, adding that Pakistan is now entering the next stage of CPEC focused on business linkages, investment, and shared prosperity.

He said Pakistan is also working on major connectivity projects, including the Trans-Afghan Railway and the Islamabad-Tehran-Istanbul Railway Corridor, which will help unlock the region’s economic potential.

“Cooperation in trade, economy, and energy will mark the beginning of a new era of regional development,” the prime minister said.

He further added that connectivity in the modern world goes beyond roads and railways. “Today’s global progress is driven by data, technology, and digital integration,” he said.

PM Shehbaz concluded by saying that Pakistan is investing heavily in digital infrastructure and youth training programs to meet modern technological needs and ensure sustainable growth.
