What Happened to Islamabad SP Adeel Akbar? Suicide, Accident, or Murder?
The Islamabad Police have been left reeling after the sudden and mysterious death of Superintendent of Police (SP) I-9, Adeel Akbar, whose body was discovered inside his official vehicle on Constitution Avenue. The 35-year-old officer, originally hailing from Kamoke, sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
Authorities have initiated an in-depth investigation to determine whether the incident was an act of suicide or an accidental shooting.
Postmortem Findings and Burial
A postmortem examination conducted at PIMS Hospital confirmed that the bullet entered through Akbar’s forehead and exited from the back of his skull, resulting in critical brain injuries that caused instant death. After completion of medico-legal formalities, his body was handed over to his family. Funeral prayers were held at the Police Lines, after which his remains were sent to Kamoke for burial. The deceased officer leaves behind a one-year-old daughter.
Initial Police Response and Formation of Inquiry Committee
Islamabad Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ali Nasir Rizvi confirmed that the SP was shot while en route to his office in his official car. Urging restraint, he stated, “It would be premature to declare the incident a suicide or an accident. We are exploring every possible angle.”
A three-member high-level committee has been formed to investigate the matter, led by Safe City DG Haroon Joyia, with DIG (Operations) Jawad Tariq and DIG (Security) Atiq Tahir as members.
Focus on Forensics and Digital Evidence
The inquiry commenced with the questioning of the SP’s driver, while his operator was detained for further investigation. Safe City surveillance footage from the vicinity has been secured, and forensic analyses of the scene are ongoing.
IGP Rizvi confirmed that the deceased officer’s mobile phone, currently locked, will be subjected to digital forensic examination. “No conclusive findings can be established until all forensic and digital reports are finalized,” he remarked.
Conflicting Accounts of a Possible Suicide
Early media reports, quoting police sources, speculated that the officer may have taken his own life. According to preliminary details, Adeel Akbar allegedly borrowed a pistol from his staff near a private hotel and shot himself in the chest. He was immediately taken to the Polyclinic Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
SP Adeel Akbar was part of the 46th Common of the Police Service of Pakistan (PSP) and had held nine different postings within the Islamabad Police.
Official Statements and Ongoing Inquiry
Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry visited PIMS Hospital shortly after the incident and confirmed that a comprehensive investigation is in progress. “A detailed report will be issued upon completion of the inquiry,” he said.
According to IGP Rizvi, initial Safe City footage has not indicated any external involvement. “The incident occurred inside the vehicle,” he noted, while reiterating that all possibilities — including suicide, accident, and foul play — remain under active examination.
