At Least 25 Injured in New Year Aerial Firing Incidents Across Karachi
At least 25 people were injured in separate incidents of celebratory aerial firing across Karachi during New Year celebrations, despite repeated warnings by law enforcement authorities against the dangerous practice.
Police and rescue officials said aerial firing was reported in several neighbourhoods of the city as people welcomed the New Year at midnight. Gunshots were heard in areas including Korangi, Golimar, Five Star Chowrangi, and the New Sabzi Mandi.
According to rescue officials, five people were injured in these areas after bullets fired into the air came down and struck residents. Among the injured were six women and two children, highlighting the serious risk posed to civilians.
In another incident reported from Chanesar Goth, a man sustained injuries after being hit by a bullet fired from an unknown direction. Police said an investigation was launched to trace those responsible.
Law enforcement agencies carried out multiple operations across the city following the incidents. Police confirmed that 56 suspects were arrested from different districts on charges related to aerial firing during New Year celebrations.
In District Central, police arrested 19 suspects involved in celebratory gunfire. District City police detained three individuals, while Malir district police arrested five suspects. In District East, seven people were taken into custody on similar charges.
Police further said that Korangi district officers arrested two suspects, while District West police detained three individuals. In District Keamari, two more suspects were arrested during late-night operations.
Earlier, Karachi police had announced strict action against aerial firing and warned that violators would face serious legal consequences. Authorities reiterated that celebratory gunfire puts innocent lives at risk and would not be tolerated.
Senior police officials said surveillance systems were being used to identify those involved. Safe City cameras were actively monitored to trace firing incidents and collect evidence.
Police officials also warned that firing incidents would not be treated as minor offences. Instead, cases would be registered under serious charges, including attempted murder.
Traffic police were deployed at major intersections to maintain smooth flow and prevent reckless behaviour during celebrations. Authorities said the objective was to ensure public safety and reduce crime during New Year festivities.
Sindh police leadership also appealed to citizens to celebrate responsibly. Residents were urged to avoid aerial firing, reckless stunts, and dangerous behaviour that could endanger lives.
