Trump Praises PM Shehbaz Sharif and CDF Asim Munir for Key Role in Iran-US Peace Mediation Efforts
US President Donald Trump has publicly praised Pakistan’s top civil and military leadership, describing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir as “great people” for their active role in facilitating dialogue between the United States and Iran.
Speaking in an interview with Fox News, Trump acknowledged their continued diplomatic efforts, stating that he holds “great respect” for both leaders. He highlighted Pakistan’s involvement in promoting peace talks and noted their contribution to bringing Washington and Tehran closer to negotiations.
Trump also explained that he cancelled a planned visit by US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, citing logistical challenges and costs, while emphasizing that Iran could directly engage with the US through secure communication channels if it chose to negotiate.
“If they [Iranians] want to talk, they can come to us, or they can call us. You know, there is a telephone. We have nice, secure lines,” Trump said.
Despite the cancelled visit, Trump reiterated his appreciation for Pakistan’s leadership, praising their “tireless efforts” in hosting and supporting initial rounds of dialogue in Islamabad. He also confirmed that Pakistani mediators would continue to play a role in the ongoing negotiation process.
The US president has repeatedly acknowledged Pakistan’s contribution to regional diplomacy, previously commending the “kind and very competent leadership” of both Shehbaz Sharif and Asim Munir during earlier rounds of talks.
Trump further noted their efforts in helping prevent escalation in regional conflicts, stating that they had helped avoid a potentially catastrophic war scenario in South Asia.
Pakistan’s role in bringing Iran and the United States to the negotiating table has received international attention, with Islamabad acting as a key diplomatic facilitator in recent peace efforts.
Field Marshal Asim Munir was reportedly central to the diplomatic engagement, welcoming delegations and maintaining strong communication with both sides during discussions held in Islamabad. His rapport with international leaders has also been noted in broader diplomatic circles.
Trump has previously referred to Field Marshal Munir as his “favourite field marshal,” reflecting a developing working relationship built during earlier regional de-escalation efforts.
