President and PM Reaffirm Commitment to Workers’ Rights on Labour Day

PM Shehbaz briefs President Zardari on 'Operation Bunyan un Marsoos'
Pakistan marked International Labour Day on Friday, May 1, 2026. President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif both paid tribute to workers across the country. They promised to protect labour rights and improve working conditions.
What Is Labour Day?
Labour Day is observed every year on May 1. It honours the contributions of workers around the world. It also highlights their long struggle for fair wages, better conditions and protection from exploitation.
President Zardari’s Message
President Zardari said this day reminds us of the historic struggle of workers. He recalled the Chicago movement of 140 years ago. Workers at that time demanded eight hours for work, eight hours for rest and eight hours for personal life. He said this demand was rooted in the principle of human dignity.
He said the Constitution of 1973 guarantees protection against exploitation. The state is bound to eliminate all forms of exploitation and ensure economic fairness.
The president praised Pakistan’s workers from all sectors. He said workers in agriculture, industry and other fields continue to drive national development through their hard work.
He also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to international labour standards. This includes fair wages, social protection, elimination of forced labour, elimination of child labour and non-discrimination. He stressed the importance of following International Labour Organization conventions.
President Zardari highlighted the role of overseas Pakistanis. He said millions of workers abroad send remittances home and represent Pakistan with professionalism and dignity.
He said safe working conditions, equal opportunities and adequate wages remain a national priority. He also stressed investment in technical and vocational education. He called for greater participation of women in the workforce and more employment opportunities for youth.
He urged workers, employers, trade unions and governments to work together. He said a nation that protects its workers protects its future.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s Message
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan joins the world in observing Labour Day with fresh resolve. He described labourers, farmers, artisans, factory workers and professionals as the backbone of society. He said their dedication keeps the country’s economy and social system running.
He said workers from fields to factories and construction sites to global markets reflect Pakistan’s strength and hardworking spirit.
The prime minister also praised overseas Pakistanis. He said they act as ambassadors of the country and strengthen the economy through remittances.
He said the government is focused on equipping workers with modern skills. Initiatives under the National Skills Development Policy are being implemented. The focus is on internationally recognised training, language skills and certification. This will help Pakistanis find better jobs abroad.
The prime minister mentioned key institutions supporting workers. He said the Employees’ Old-Age Benefits Institution and the Workers Welfare Fund are providing pensions, housing and education to workers and their families.
He called on federal and provincial governments, businesses and industrialists to protect the dignity and rights of workers. He said fair treatment and better working conditions are a shared responsibility.
He ended his message with a strong appeal. He said Pakistan’s workforce must continue to shine globally through dedication, skill and integrity as a symbol of national pride.
