NDMA predicts 2027 could be among hottest years on record

ISLAMABAD: An expert from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned that 2027 could become one of the hottest years on record due to the ongoing effects of climate change.

Speaking to a local media outlet, Syed Muhammad Tayyab Shah said global temperatures continue to rise, with each year becoming hotter than the previous one. He stressed the need for stronger cooperation among government departments, emergency services, and partner organizations to tackle climate-related challenges.

He said high temperatures are expected to continue in 2026, increasing environmental pressure and creating risks for public safety across the country.

According to the NDMA expert, rising temperatures could put additional pressure on rivers, speed up glacier melting, alter weather patterns, and increase hazards in mountainous regions.

He also noted that greenhouse gas emissions are playing a major role in climate change, making Pakistan one of the countries most vulnerable to natural disasters such as landslides, flash floods, and heavy rainfall.

Tayyab Shah said the NDMA is improving disaster preparedness through early warning systems, digital monitoring, and better alert mechanisms. However, he emphasized that effective disaster management requires close coordination between federal and provincial authorities, emergency services, and humanitarian organizations.

He concluded by calling for urgent action on climate change, warning that delays could increase the risks and impact of extreme weather events in the coming years.
