PMD issues GLOF warning as temperatures rise in KP and GB
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning that high temperatures in Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa may continue until the first week of July 2026. The rising temperatures could speed up the melting of snow and glaciers in mountain areas.
According to the advisory, fast snow and ice melting may increase water levels in rivers, streams, and water channels. Existing glacial lakes may grow larger, while new lakes could also form in vulnerable areas.
The PMD warned that low-lying areas near rivers and downstream regions could face a higher risk of flooding. There is also a danger of flash floods, glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF), and mud and debris flows caused by melting ice and excess water.
The department said that landslides may occur in steep mountain areas because of unstable ground conditions.
Residents and tourists in snow-covered valleys have been advised to avoid riverbanks, streams, glacial lakes, and narrow mountain roads. People have also been urged to stay away from unstable slopes and follow weather updates and official warnings.
Authorities have asked local communities to stay in contact with disaster management committees for guidance and emergency support. Disaster management agencies and other departments have been directed to remain on alert and spread public awareness through SMS, social media, and local communication networks.
The PMD has advised everyone to remain careful and take necessary precautions to avoid any dangerous situation.
