August 5, 2019: A Dark Chapter for Kashmiri Identity, Right to Self-Determination and International Law

The Kashmir dispute remains a longstanding issue between Pakistan and India. Pakistan maintains that Kashmir is an issue of the right to self-determination of millions of Kashmiris and continues to raise the matter at international forums.

India, meanwhile, maintains that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of the country and argues that constitutional changes introduced in 2019 were aimed at improving governance, development, and security in the region.

Despite decades of tensions, Indian Occupied Kashmir (IOK) remains one of South Asia’s most sensitive disputes, with continued debates over political rights, security measures, and the aspirations of the people living in the territory.
