PM briefed on initial findings of wheat import probe

Initial findings of the investigation into wheat import have been shared with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The cabinet division secretary and food secretary briefed the prime minster on the initial details of the wheat import investigation.

The findings suggest that from August 2023 to March 2024, wheat worth Rs330 billion was imported. 1.3 million metric tons of wheat were found infected. During the current government, 700,000 metric tons of wheat worth Rs80 billion have been imported, the report said. $1.10 billion paid to import wheat.  Over 400,000 metric tons of wheat was imported in October 2023, it added.

Meanwhile, the farmers have announced to come out on the streets against the  governments’ failure to procure wheat from them.

This was announced by Kissan Ittehad Chairman Khalid Khokhar while addressing a news conference today.

He said that the farmers would launch protests on May 10 from Multan.

The chairman said that the farmers cannot describe the pain they are currently suffering from while the mafia is making money by smuggling wheat.

Khokhar said that had 4.4 million tons of wheat from last year but despite the availability over 3.5 million tons  were imported.
