28 February, 2024 12:42

Newly elected representatives in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been sworn in amid shouting and chanting by PTI workers.

KP Assembly Speaker Mushtaq Ghani administered the oath to the MPAs-elect.

The speaker also said that the election for the speaker and deputy speaker would take place tomorrow (Thursday) at 10am. He said that nomination papers could be filed before 5pm to the assembly secretariat.

The session had to begin at 11am, however, it is yet to start as the elected lawmakers are facing difficulty in entering the Assembly hall.

According to Geo News, internet services have also been suspended in the area surrounding the KP Assembly.

It will be the third provincial legislature that will take oath after the February 8 general elections. Last week, the assemblies in Punjab and Sindh were sworn in.

In Wednesday’s session Speaker Mushtaq Ghani is expected to administer oath to the new elected provincial legislators.

21 seats for women and 4 seats for minorities will remain vacant if there is no decision regarding the allocation of specific seats to the Sunni Ittehad Council.

In the first session, two women each from Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam and Pakistan Muslim League-N and one woman from Pakistan People’s Party will take oath while 21 reserved seats will remain vacant.

Four members on minorities’ seat will also not be able to take oath.

Following the general elections, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed independent candidates, who have joined the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), have emerged as the largest party with 90 seats and are in poll position to form the government in the province.

Ali Amin Gandapur has been nominated candidate for the chief minister post by PTI.
