Singer Pankaj Udhas passes away at 72

Renowned Ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas has died at the age of 72 in Mumbai. He was suffering from a prolonged illness.

The news of his death was shared by his daughter Nayaab Udhas in an Instagram post which reads: “With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on 26th February due to a prolonged illness. Udhas family.”

According to Indian media, the 72-year-old was admitted in Breach Candy hospital in Mumbai, where he breathed his last on February 26.

Ghazal maestro Udhas was widely hailed for his iconic renditions, including Chitthi Aayi Hai, Aur Aahista Kijiye Baatein, Chandi Jaisa Rang Hai Tera, and Na Kajre Ki Dhar.

Udhas took home prominent accolades throughout his celebrated ghazal career, the highlight being the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award of the Republic of India.

Born in a musically inclined family in Gujarat, he was the youngest of three brothers.

Both his brothers — Manhar Udhas and Nirmal Udhas — established their careers in singing and Pankaj followed their example.

Pankaj Udhas is survived by wife Farida Ushas and daughters Nayaab and Reva.
