FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32: Qualified Teams and Eliminations

24 June, 2026 21:32

The FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage race is taking shape as several teams have secured their places in the Round of 32, while others have been eliminated after the group stage results and new qualification rules decided their fate.

The expanded 48-team World Cup format has introduced a new knockout structure, with the top two teams from each of the 12 groups and the eight best third-place teams moving into the next round.

The Round of 32 will be played for the first time in World Cup history following the tournament’s expansion. The knockout schedule continues with the Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, third-place playoff, and the final on July 19.

World Cup 2026 Knockout Format Schedule

  • Group Stage: June 11 to June 27
  • Round of 32: June 28 to July 3
  • Round of 16: July 4 to July 7
  • Quarterfinals: July 9 to July 11
  • Semifinals: July 14 to July 15
  • Third-Place Match: July 18
  • Final: July 19

FIFA World Cup 2026 New Tiebreak Rules

FIFA has introduced a major change in group-stage ranking rules by making head-to-head results the first deciding factor when teams finish level on points.

Previously, goal difference was the main separator, but the new system prioritizes matches between the tied teams before considering overall goal difference, goals scored, disciplinary records, and FIFA rankings.

The new rule has already affected qualification scenarios, with teams such as Haiti, Türkiye, Tunisia, Jordan, and Panama eliminated because they cannot overtake third-place teams after losing their direct group matches.

Teams Qualified for World Cup 2026 Round of 32

Mexico (Group A)

Mexico became the first team to qualify for the knockout stage after securing first place in Group A with a victory over South Korea. The hosts opened their campaign with a win against South Africa.

United States (Group D)

The United States reached the Round of 32 after defeating Australia and taking control of Group D. They started their tournament with a strong win against Paraguay.

Germany (Group E)

Germany booked their knockout place after defeating Ivory Coast. The European side returned strongly after disappointing group-stage exits in previous World Cups.

Argentina (Group J)

Defending champions Argentina qualified after beating Austria, with Lionel Messi continuing his record-breaking World Cup campaign. Argentina also secured the top position in their group.

France (Group I)

France confirmed qualification after a convincing victory over Iraq. Kylian Mbappé played a key role in the team’s successful start.

Norway (Group I)

Norway advanced after defeating Senegal. The team returned to the World Cup stage after a long absence and impressed with strong attacking performances.

Colombia (Group K)

Colombia became another confirmed knockout team after beating DR Congo and starting their campaign with consecutive victories.

Teams Eliminated From World Cup 2026

Haiti (Group C)

Haiti became the first team eliminated after losing their opening matches, ending their first World Cup appearance since 1974.

Türkiye (Group D)

Türkiye were eliminated after defeats against Australia and Paraguay, ending their return to the tournament after 24 years.

Tunisia (Group F)

Tunisia exited after heavy defeats, despite their historic World Cup achievements as the first African team to win a World Cup match.

Jordan (Group J)

Jordan’s debut World Cup campaign ended after losses against Austria and Algeria.

Panama (Group L)

Panama were eliminated following defeats against Ghana and Croatia.

With eight third-place teams still able to advance, many qualification battles remain undecided until the final group matches. The new FIFA head-to-head tiebreak system and expanded tournament format have created a more unpredictable World Cup knockout race.
