Russia demands astronomical $20 decillion from Google

04 November, 2024 12:18

Russia is demanding a whopping sum of $20 decillion from Google for refusing to pay fines incurred after blocking pro-Russian YouTube channels.

The staggering penalty vastly surpasses the size of the global economy.

In comparison, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the world’s GDP stands at around $110 trillion.

While Google’s parent company, Alphabet, is valued at approximately $2 trillion.

According to TASS, a court had previously ordered Google to unblock the channels, many of which have been restricted since 2022.

It also warned the tech giant to face exponentially increasing fines if it failed to comply.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov admitted he “can’t even pronounce this figure” but said the amount was “symbolic,” criticizing Google for restricting Russian broadcasters on its platform.

The search engine giant acknowledged “ongoing legal matters” in Russia, specifically related to compounding civil judgments on account terminations, including for sanctioned parties.

The company stated that it does not anticipate these issues will impact its earnings materially.
