Cameron Hunt charged with alleged murder of his wife Louise Hunt
A tragic house fire in Geham, Queensland has led to the arrest of Cameron Hunt, who is now facing serious charges including murder and arson. The blaze, which tore through a home on Strack Road just before 3am on Tuesday, claimed the life of 43-year-old Louise Hunt.
Emergency crews arrived to find the house fully engulfed in flames. After several hours battling the fire, firefighters discovered the body of Ms Hunt inside the ruins. Two children, reportedly found nearby, were unharmed. However, Cameron Hunt, Louise’s husband, was initially missing from the scene.
A major investigation was launched, and Cameron Hunt was located around 12 hours later in Redcliffe, over 200km away from the family’s residence. He was taken into custody and has since been charged with one count of murder (domestic violence offence) and one count of arson.
Queensland Police released a statement confirming:
“A 45-year-old Geham man has been charged with one count each of murder domestic violence offence and arson.”
Hunt remains in custody and is expected to appear in Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Wednesday. Formal identification of Ms Hunt’s remains is ongoing.
The home, reportedly inherited from Ms Hunt’s late parents, Angela and Phil Griffiths, was completely destroyed in the fire. The Griffiths, well known in the Toowoomba community, are said to be devastated by the loss.
Detective Superintendent George Marchesini said a dedicated investigation team, Operation X-Ray Geo, is now in place:
“We have homicide investigators from Brisbane who are at the investigation centre assisting Toowoomba detectives,” he stated.
“It is still early stages of the investigation and obviously early stages of doing any thorough examination of that particular scene.”
He added that the two children are “safe and well and accounted for” and confirmed there were no hospitalisations.
Authorities are continuing to investigate whether anyone else was present in the house at the time of the fire.
“Our investigations now are focusing on not only who resides there but could there have been any other people at that residence,” said Det Supt Marchesini.
“It’s a terrible situation when you have an incident like this.”
Police are urging anyone with information, dashcam or CCTV footage to come forward as the investigation into the fatal incident continues.
