Gavin Newsom sues Trump over 'Unlawful' tariffs in major legal showdown
In a dramatic escalation of tensions between California and the White House, Governor Gavin Newsom announced a lawsuit Wednesday challenging President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs, which he claims are devastating the state’s economy – the largest in the U.S. and fifth-largest worldwide.
The Legal Battle Ahead
The lawsuit, filed in federal court, makes two key arguments:
- Executive Overreach: Trump’s use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China – including a blanket 10% levy on all imports – exceeds presidential authority.
- Congressional Authority: The administration bypassed required approval from Congress, violating constitutional separation of powers.
“These unlawful tariffs are economic arson,” Newsom said at a press conference. “California farmers, tech manufacturers, and working families are paying the price.”
California’s Stakes in the Trade War
The state has absorbed heavy losses due to Trump’s trade policies:
- Agriculture: $1.5 billion in lost exports (per UC Davis research)
- Ports: 40% drop in cargo volume at Los Angeles/Long Beach ports
- Tech: Tariffs on Chinese components have raised production costs for Silicon Valley firms
A 2019 study by the Public Policy Institute of California estimated the tariffs could eliminate up to 75,000 jobs statewide.
Trump’s Defense
The White House maintains the tariffs protect U.S. industries from unfair competition. “California’s failed leadership would rather sue than support American workers,” said a Trump campaign spokesperson.
