Menorca crash: Brit woman, 59, fighting for life in horror car smash

A 59-year-old British tourist is in critical condition after a devastating three-car collision near Mahón, the capital of Menorca. The serious crash occurred around 10:30am on Sunday on the Me-1 highway, near the scenic town of Ferreries.

The woman, a passenger in one of the vehicles, had to be cut free from the wreckage by emergency crews. She was immediately transported to the intensive care unit at Mateu Orfila Hospital in Mahón. Her 64-year-old husband, who was behind the wheel, sustained serious chest injuries and is also receiving medical treatment.

The crash involved a total of five victims, including a 21-year-old Spanish driver who is also in critical condition. According to the reports, the Spanish man veered into the opposite lane while heading towards the capital, triggering the head-on collision. Firefighters were required to extract him from his severely damaged vehicle.

Two additional women, aged 19 and 29—one reportedly Spanish—were also injured and taken to hospital. A fifth person was treated at the scene but did not require hospitalisation.

Graphic images from the crash site show the wreckage of multiple vehicles, with twisted metal and shattered glass scattered across the road. Authorities from the Civil Guard’s traffic division have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.

A spokesperson from the emergency services confirmed: “Five people were injured in a three-vehicle collision. Two of the victims, including a woman around 60 and a man in his twenties, had to be freed from their vehicles by firefighters.”

The incident comes months after a separate fatal crash on the same island, where a 72-year-old Argentinian woman lost her life in a taxi accident involving a British family.

Local officials are urging drivers to exercise extreme caution, particularly on Menorca’s narrow roads which can be especially dangerous during the busy tourist season.
