Scottie Scheffler responds with class after Backlash Over Rory McIlroy’s Masters Moment

16 April, 2025 15:09

Scottie Scheffler has responded to criticism surrounding his demeanor during the green jacket ceremony at the 2025 Masters, where he presented Rory McIlroy with golf’s most iconic prize. Speaking ahead of the RBC Heritage tournament, the 2024 champion addressed suggestions that his handover appeared rushed or lacked emotion.

Scheffler, who finished fourth at Augusta this year, maintained he simply wanted to allow McIlroy his moment in the spotlight. “It was such an emotional day for him,” he said. “I kind of just tried to stay out of the way and basically just get the jacket on without embarrassing him or myself.”

The American golfer acknowledged the significance of McIlroy’s achievement, as the Northern Irishman became the sixth man—and first European—to complete the career Grand Slam. McIlroy’s victory at Augusta ended an 11-year major drought since his last major win at the 2014 PGA Championship.

“It was cool to be able to see Rory get the job done,” Scheffler said. “From the outside, it looked more like relief than anything. Rory has accomplished everything in the game of golf. This was the last thing on his list.”

Having watched the final moments of the tournament closely, Scheffler expressed deep admiration for his friend’s perseverance under pressure. “I don’t know what it feels like to chase the career Grand Slam, but I do know how it feels when people constantly question what you haven’t done. It can be exhausting.”

As McIlroy celebrated with his family and team, Scheffler was quietly moved by the moment. “To be able to congratulate him and see the joy in him and his family—it was really cool,” he added.

Though winless so far this season, Scheffler also offered a note of reflection, emphasizing how fleeting moments of victory can be. “The feeling you get from winning a tournament is a pretty special feeling. I wish it lasted longer than it does. It doesn’t really last very long.”

In the face of online criticism, Scheffler’s composed and thoughtful response underscored the respect and sportsmanship that continues to define golf’s greatest stages.
