Johnny Sexton to join Farrell's Lions backroom team
Rugby legend Johnny Sexton is set to begin the next chapter of his career after being named to Andy Farrellโs British and Irish Lions coaching staff for this summerโs tour of Australia.
The former Ireland fly-half, who retired following the 2023 Rugby World Cup, brings a wealth of experience from his two previous Lions tours as a player (2013 and 2017) and his decorated playing career, which included five Six Nations titles.
Since hanging up his boots, Sexton has been working in an informal coaching role with Ireland during last Novemberโs Autumn Nations Series. He will transition into a full-time position with the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) starting 1 August.
“I am hugely excited to continue the next chapter in my coaching journey with the British and Irish Lions,”ย Sexton said.ย “Playing for the Lions was a huge ambition of mine, and my memories of those tours to Australia and New Zealand will stay with me forever.”
The Lions will begin their campaign with a farewell match against Argentina in Dublin on 20 June before heading to Australia for a three-Test series against the Wallabies on:
- 19 July (First Test)
- 26 July (Second Test)
- 2 August (Third Test)
Head coach Andy Farrell, who worked closely with Sexton during Irelandโs recent success, praised the former captainโs leadership and rugby intellect.
“Johnnyโs understanding of the game and his experience at the highest level will be invaluable to this group,”ย Farrell said.ย “He knows what it takes to win in a Lions jersey.”
Sextonโs appointment continues the Lionsโ tradition of integrating former players into coaching roles, blending fresh insight with the squadโs existing leadership.
