Robert Maudsley is moved to new prison after 46 years inside 'glass cage'
Robert Maudsley, the UK’s longest-serving prisoner—locked up for 51 years—has been moved from HMP Wakefield (dubbed “Monster Mansion”) to HMP Whitemoor in Cambridgeshire.
The quadruple killer, once considered Britain’s most dangerous inmate, had been held in a glass-walled cell for 46 years, setting a world record for solitary confinement.
Hunger Strike Over PlayStation Removal
The transfer follows Maudsley’s recent hunger strike in protest after prison authorities confiscated his TV and PlayStation. A close friend, Loveinia Grace MacKenney, claims he is now being “persecuted” and placed in a shared unit despite his history of violence against other inmates—particularly those convicted of s*x crimes.
“It’s a disaster waiting to happen,” MacKenney said. “He doesn’t want to be around other men due to childhood abuse trauma. His handwriting is shaky—he’s in a terrible state.”
“Hannibal the Cannibal” – A Killer with a Dark Reputation
Maudsley earned his macabre nickname after killing four men—three of them fellow inmates, all s*x offenders or abusers. His most infamous murder occurred in 1977 when he stabbed a Broadmoor prisoner in the ear with a sharpened plastic spoon, leading to false rumors he ate part of the victim’s brain.
- 1974: Killed a child s*x offender in London.
- 1977: Murdered a fellow Broadmoor patient.
- 1978: Strangled and stabbed two inmates at Wakefield.
“Buried Alive in a Coffin” – Life in Solitary
Since 1983, Maudsley spent 23 hours a day in a bulletproof glass cell (18ft x 15ft), which he described as “being buried alive.” His brother, Paul Maudsley, revealed in a recent phone call:
“He told me, ‘Don’t be surprised if this is the last time I call you.’”
“He’s Not the Monster They Say” – Former Detective Speaks Out
Ex-police investigator Paul Harrison, who interviewed Maudsley, said:
“If you didn’t know his crimes, you’d think he was just a clever, articulate man. He’s not like other serial killers—he doesn’t want freedom. But keeping him isolated for 40 years is psychological torture.”
Family’s Plea: “He Only Killed the Worst of the Worst”
Maudsley’s nephew, Gavin Maudsley, told Channel 5’s Evil Behind Bars:
“He accepts his fate, but put him near rapists or pedophiles, and he’ll kill them. He never harmed women or children—only those who did.”
Prison Service Silent on Transfer
The UK Prison Service declined to comment, leaving questions about Maudsley’s future conditions unanswered.
