18 April, 2025 16:42

A night of Easter celebrations turned into tragedy in Fuengirola, Costa del Sol, when a speeding car plowed into pedestrians on the crowded Paseo MarΓtimo Rey de EspaΓ±a. The accident, which occurred around 10 p.m. on Thursday, left two dead and ten injuredβ€”three critically.

The driver, a 45-year-old Iranian woman, allegedly tested positive for alcohol and was driving without a license. Authorities arrested her at the scene, where she now faces charges ofΒ two counts of gross negligence homicide, serious injury by negligence, and driving under the influence.

According to police reports, the woman was speeding toward Marbella when she lost control, veered off the road, and smashed into a building column. The impact was so violent that witnesses described it as “like a bomb exploding.”

The crash claimed two lives:

  • AΒ 47-year-old passengerΒ inside the car, who died on impact.
  • AΒ 25-year-old pedestrianΒ from Seville, who was struck and killed instantly.

The car then careened onto the sidewalk, mowing down pedestrians before crashing into a pizzeria terrace and another vehicle. Miraculously, the occupants of the second car escaped unharmed.

One diner at the pizzeria recalled the terrifying moment:
“I felt almost an earthquake. I saw the car hit the boyβ€”he literally flew through the air. You never think you’ll witness something like this right outside your home.”

A nearby shop owner likened the scene toΒ “a Hollywood crime movie,”Β with emergency services swarming the area. The force of the crash even shook nearby buildings, sending people rushing outside in panic.

Fuengirola’s City Council expressed deep sorrow over the incident, extending condolences to the victims’ families and wishing a speedy recoveryΒ to the injured. Among the ten hurt were the driver, a baby, and three men in serious condition.

The tragedy has reignited discussions about drunk driving penalties and pedestrian safetyΒ in busy tourist areas. As investigations continue, locals are left shaken, with one witness vowing,Β “From now on, I’ll walk on the sidewalk extra carefully.”
