Is Fortnite Down? When Will Service Resume for Update 34.40
On Tuesday, April 22, hundreds of Fortnite players reported issues with the game in the early morning hours.
The reports came in as Fortnite went into scheduled downtime for a major update — version 34.40. According to the Downdetector website, users started seeing problems when the update began.
Fortnite’s official X (formerly Twitter) account @FortniteStatus confirmed that downtime began at 4 AM ET. Matchmaking was disabled shortly before this so that ongoing games could finish. This is normal whenever a major update is released.
The exact length of the downtime wasn’t shared right away. However, Fortnite usually takes about two hours for such updates. That means players could expect the game to return around 6 AM ET. Past updates have followed a similar schedule, so this estimate is likely close.
Why Was Fortnite Down?
The downtime was needed to roll out update 34.40. This update is packed with new content and gameplay improvements. One of the biggest additions is the Armored Transport spawner from Fortnite Battle Royale. Players can now use it in Creative mode.
Also included are new Rebel’s Roost prefabs and galleries. These tools allow players to build new map designs and game experiences. Fortnite has also added more characters and tools for creators working on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) islands. This is part of an ongoing crossover between Fortnite and the TMNT franchise.
What’s New in Update 34.40?
Even before the update was released, some leakers shared details about what’s coming. Popular leaker @ShiinaBR revealed on X that two weapons are being unvaulted. These are the Business Turret and the Shield Breaker EMP. These items were previously removed from the game but will now return for players to use.
There’s also news about a new Fortnite skin. It’s said to be inspired by actress Jenna Ortega. The skin first appeared in key artwork for the Sabrina Carpenter Music Pass. Along with this skin, there’s a new version of the Monks character coming too.
More content is coming soon. Fans can expect teasers for Chapter 6, Season 3, in the next few weeks. There will also be reskins for Rebel Raider and Aerial Assault Trooper. But only the original owners of these skins will get the updated versions.
The TMNT crossover is also growing. More items, characters, and tools are being added to make creative TMNT-themed maps. This follows the trend of Fortnite working with popular brands and shows.
