Alex Yee’s London Marathon Debut: A Decade After 5 Mini Wins

24 April, 2025 11:10

Alex Yee is preparing for a special moment in his life. The 27-year-old Olympic and world triathlon champion will make his debut at the London Marathon on Sunday. For Yee, it’s more than just a race — it’s a return to his childhood dreams.

Yee, who has Chinese heritage from his father’s side, remembers running in the Mini London Marathon as a child. He placed third twice. The best part for him? Celebrating with his family over dim sum afterward. That childhood memory remains strong even now.

“I’m not thinking past the experience,” Yee told BBC Sport. “But afterwards, I’d definitely like to get some dim sum with my family and have that déjà vu moment.”

When he was young, Yee used to watch the London Marathon from behind the barriers. He would beg his parents to help him see the elite runners up close. Back then, he never imagined that one day he would be among the stars of the race.

Now, fans will line the streets hoping to catch a glimpse of him. The London Marathon is one of the biggest races in the world, and Yee is stepping into it as a new challenge.

After a huge year in 2023, Yee felt the need for a mental refresh. He won Olympic gold in Paris after a stunning recovery and claimed the world triathlon title just a few weeks later. These wins made him the most decorated Olympic triathlete in history.

He wanted something different to stay motivated. He brought up the idea of running a full marathon to his coach.

“I’ve asked every single year,” Yee said. “But it never really made sense.”

This year, things changed. His team thought about what would help him prepare for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. Running the marathon felt like the right decision, both mentally and physically.

“It’s been really exciting to work on my running again,” Yee said. “For five years, I’ve focused on swimming and biking to be competitive in triathlon. But running has always been my love.”

This new goal has brought him joy and excitement. It’s a chance to go back to what he enjoys most and to test himself in a different way.

Yee’s journey from watching the London Marathon as a boy to racing in it as a champion is inspiring. He represents dedication, hard work, and the beauty of full-circle moments. After the race, a simple family meal of dim sum will mean the world to him.

The London Marathon is known for its energy, crowd support, and emotional stories. This year, Alex Yee’s story might be one of the most touching.
