Carolyn Sanger Dies After Tragic Fall While Hiking With Kids in Massachusetts

25 April, 2025 12:15

A tragic accident happened at Purgatory Chasm State Reservation in Massachusetts when a mother of four, Carolyn Sanger, fell to her death while hiking with her family. She was 49 years old.

The accident took place around 2:00 PM on Wednesday in Sutton, according to the local police and reports. Carolyn was hiking with three of her children and other family members when she lost her footing and fell between 50 and 75 feet down a rocky area of the trail.

Authorities believe her death was an accidental fall. The part of the trail where it happened is known to be difficult and dangerous.

Carolyn, also known as “Carrie” by her friends and family, lived in Topsfield, Massachusetts. She was married and had four children. A family friend, Tim Paoli, told reporters that they do not believe she was distracted when the fall happened.

“She simply lost her footing,” he said. “That part of the trail is scary. We don’t think she was using her phone or anything like that.”

Several people who were also hiking nearby saw what happened and rushed to help. Among them were medical professionals. They tried to save her, but sadly, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police and emergency teams responded quickly. The area was closed off while investigators checked the scene. Officials believe it was a tragic accident and not foul play.

Carolyn’s death has shocked and saddened many in her community. A GoFundMe page set up by loved ones described her as a kind and generous person.

“She was a bright light,” the post read. “A wonderful, selfless mother who raised four respectful and responsible children. She was a friend to all. Her smile and spirit will be missed by everyone.”

Her husband, Michael Sanger, also spoke to reporters, saying, “She was amazing. She brought light into dark days for so many people. She was my everything.”

The couple met in college and had been married for nearly 20 years. They were planning to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary this September.

Before starting her own wellness business, Carolyn worked as an oncology nurse, helping cancer patients. Her career and later work showed her passion for caring for others.

Friends and neighbors have been offering support to the family during this heartbreaking time. The GoFundMe fundraiser is being used to help with expenses and support Carolyn’s children.

Officials are reminding people to be careful while hiking, especially in tricky areas like Purgatory Chasm. Proper footwear, staying alert, and avoiding risky parts of trails are key to staying safe.
