Schizophrenic mother sentenced after killing 6-year-old son in tragic case

25 April, 2025 23:03

A mother who killed her six-year-old son with a handsaw while suffering from a severe psychotic episode has been detained indefinitely under the Mental Health Act.

Karolina Zurawska, 42, was sentenced at Swansea Crown Court after admitting to the manslaughter of her son, Alexander Zurawski, by reason of diminished responsibility. She also pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of her 67-year-old father, Krzysztof Siwi, earlier the same day.

The court heard how Zurawska, previously described as a loving and devoted mother, had been overwhelmed by the burden of caring for Alexander, who was recovering from a brain tumour and had been left partially sighted and reliant on a walking cane.

On August 29, 2024, police were called to the family home in Gendros, Swansea, after neighbours reported hearing screams. Officers arrived to find Alexander dead in the entrance hallway and Zurawska kneeling beside his body with a handsaw.

Judge Paul Thomas KC said: “The often overused word ‘tragic’ does not begin to adequately reflect what happened that day. You are not a wicked mother, far from it. You are a lady whose mental state deteriorated under the overwhelming weight of your care and concern for Alexander.”

He added that Zurawska may never be released, stating: “That day may never come.”

During the hearing, it was revealed that earlier the same day, Zurawska had attacked her father three times with a knife, telling him: “I’m sorry I have to kill you today.” Despite his injuries, Mr Siwi did not contact police, believing his daughter would never harm Alexander.

In an emotional victim impact statement, Mr Siwi expressed deep regret: “I never thought that a loving mother would cause harm to her beloved child… If I had called the police, this tragedy may never have happened.”

Zurawska was found to have been suffering from a psychotic illness at the time, with three psychiatric experts confirming her mental state had deteriorated significantly.

Alexander, who was due to return to school after the summer holiday, was described as a bright, kind, and mature child who spoke both English and Polish. His family said he was “amazing,” “very clever,” and “always eager to help.”

Bethan Peterson, headteacher at Whitestone Primary School, paid tribute: “Alexander was a delightful, determined little boy whose tenacity and positive demeanour ensured his success in all he undertook. He was extremely loved and popular among his peers and staff. He will be sadly missed.”

Detective Chief Inspector Matthew Davies of South Wales Police said: “This was a tragic and deeply distressing incident which has had a profound effect on the whole community. Our thoughts remain with Alexander’s family and friends.”

Zurawska will remain in a secure hospital and can only be released if doctors are satisfied she no longer poses a threat to herself or others.
