BBC’s Jon Kay Pays Tribute to Guest Dave Smith After His Death at 76

29 April, 2025 14:10

BBC Breakfast presenter Jon Kay has announced the death of Dave Smith, a guest who touched hearts worldwide after surviving 300 days of COVID-19. Dave passed away at the age of 76.

Jon shared the sad news in a heartfelt post on social media, along with several touching photos of their time together.

Dave Smith: The “Miracle Man”

Dave Smith was a driving instructor and a pub singer from Bristol. He became famous in 2021 after revealing on BBC Breakfast that he had suffered from COVID-19 for about 300 days straight—longer than anyone else known at the time.

Doctors explained that Dave’s body could not fight the virus properly because he had a weak immune system from years of cancer treatment.

He Beat the Odds

Despite being in and out of intensive care for months, Dave finally beat the virus after ten tough months. His story inspired many people around the world.

Even though the illness damaged his lungs, Dave was determined to sing again. He joined a special online program run by the English National Opera. The program helps people with Long COVID improve their breathing through music and singing.

Jon Kay followed Dave’s journey closely and said that watching Dave perform again was “remarkable.” Dave called his comeback gig his “best night ever,” and Jon said it was one of the most special stories he had ever covered.

A Loving Husband and Performer

Jon also shared that Dave’s health got worse over the past year due to the lasting effects of both cancer and COVID. Still, Dave always had a zest for life, a great sense of humour, and a deep love for his wife Lyn and their family.

“Over the last year, Dave’s health deteriorated,” Jon said. “But whenever we spoke, he always retained his love of performing and his devotion to his family.”

Farewell to a Fighter

Jon Kay said that Dave died peacefully at home earlier this month. His funeral was held last week. Jon ended his tribute by writing: “RIP Dave Smith. An ordinary name. An extraordinary chap. An honour to have known you.”

Fans and followers shared their sympathy and memories online after Jon’s announcement.

One person wrote: “God bless Dave. This is very sad news. Sending lots of love to all his family and friends.”

Another said: “You did a lovely story on him. May his soul rest in peace. Seemed a lovely man.”

A third commented: “So sad, but what a great man. The stars will sound more tuneful now with the sound of Dave.”
