Man Arrested in Death of Ice Hockey Star Adam Johnson Will Not Face Criminal Charges

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) announced that no criminal charges will be filed against a professional ice hockey player linked to the death of Adam Johnson during a match in October 2023. Johnson, a 29-year-old American athlete, died after a collision on the ice while playing for the Nottingham Panthers against the Sheffield Steelers.

What Happened During the Match?
The tragic incident occurred on October 28, 2023, during an Elite League Challenge Cup game at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena. Johnson, a centre for the Nottingham Panthers, suffered a fatal neck injury in the 35th minute of the game. He collided with an opponent during play, causing severe bleeding. Players quickly formed a circle around Johnson as paramedics rushed onto the ice. He was taken to Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after.

Police Investigation and CPS Decision
South Yorkshire Police began a manslaughter investigation after the incident. A man, believed to be the opposing player involved in the collision, was arrested. However, after reviewing evidence, the CPS stated there was “no realistic prospect of conviction” for any crime.
