U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has warned fellow Republicans that they could lose the 2026 midterm elections if they fail to keep former President Donald Trump’s tax promises.
She posted the warning on social media, saying that some conservative House Republicans are pushing back against Trump’s proposed tax cuts, which include no tax on tips, overtime pay, and Social Security.
Why This Matters
The Republican Party is trying to pass a large legislative package based on Trump’s campaign agenda. But internal divisions are slowing things down. These disagreements could damage the GOP’s chances of winning in 2026.
During Trump’s first term, Republicans had full control of Congress but still struggled to pass major laws. Some fear this could happen again.
What Greene Said
Greene shared an online poll she previously conducted. It asked if people would still support House Republicans in 2026 if they failed to pass Trump’s tax promises.
84% of respondents said “no.”
She warned: “Not delivering President Trump’s campaign promises of NO TAX on tips, overtime, and Social Security will cost Republicans the midterms bigly.”
What’s in the GOP Plan
Republicans are working on a big new bill that includes:
Tax cuts
Immigration reforms
Energy policy changes
Trump’s tax proposals build on the 2017 tax cuts passed during his presidency. The new cuts aim to reduce or remove taxes on:
Tips
Overtime
Social Security income
Some Republicans support the plan but worry about the cost. Reports say the plan could add $5 trillion to the national debt over 10 years.
Party Divided Over Strategy
GOP leaders can’t agree on how to pass the plan:
Some want one big bill covering tax, immigration, and energy.
Others want to split it into two parts.
Republicans currently have narrow majorities:
220–213 in the House
53–47 in the Senate
That means unity is crucial to pass the bill.
What Others Are Saying
Donald Trump on Truth Social: “It is IMPERATIVE that Republicans in the House pass the Tax Cut Bill, NOW! Our Country Will Boom!!!”
Sen. Rand Paul to Reuters: “I support tax cuts but not adding $4 or $5 trillion to the debt.”
What’s Next?
Republicans want to pass the bill by July 4, but that goal may be hard to meet. Debates continue over how to:
Structure the bill
Pay for the tax cuts
Keep the party united
