A man suspected of attacking two women in Leeds during a misogynistic “massacre” attempt has died, counter-terrorism police confirmed Monday. The attack occurred Saturday afternoon in Headingley’s Otley Road area, a busy spot known for its pubs.
What Happened?
Owen Lawrence, 38, allegedly shot two women (aged 19 and 31) with a crossbow on Saturday. After attacking them, he turned the weapon on himself, police said. Officers arrested Lawrence at the scene and took him to a hospital, where he later died overnight.
Victims’ Conditions
Both women were rushed to the hospital. The 19-year-old suffered life-threatening injuries but is now stable. The 31-year-old has been discharged.
Police Investigation
Counter-terrorism police took over the case after finding Facebook posts by Lawrence. In these posts, he claimed he wanted to kill women and listed reasons like anger over “gender equality,” feminists, TV shows (Hollyoaks), and the early 2000s show Pop Idol. Police confirmed Lawrence acted alone and are not searching for others.
Why Counter-Terrorism Police Were Involved
The posts suggested a planned hate-driven attack targeting women. Police called it a “misogynistic killing spree” attempt. Investigators are now reviewing his online activity and building a case for the coroner.
