01 May, 2025 14:06

A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded in Nottinghamshire as the body of a 16-year-old boy was recovered from Colwick Country Park lake, where he had gone missing while swimming on a warm afternoon.

According to Nottinghamshire Police, the teenager got into difficulty in the water on Tuesday. Emergency responders rushed to the site around 5:20pm following distress reports. After a search effort by specialist teams, an underwater unit located the boy’s body shortly after 8pm. His family was notified and is currently receiving support from trained police officers.

Authorities have confirmed that there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the boy’s death. A report is being prepared for the coroner as the investigation continues into how he came into distress.

The incident comes amid a spell of warmer-than-average temperatures across the UK.

Chief Inspector David Mather expressed his condolences, calling it a “tragic discovery.” He urged the public to remain cautious around open water:
“Regardless of intent, open water can conceal dangers that may prove deadly. This heartbreaking case is a painful reminder of those hidden risks, especially during warm spells.”

Tom Staples of Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue added, “Despite the relentless efforts of emergency crews, we are devastated to confirm the loss. Our thoughts are with the boy’s loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

Councillor Sam Lux of Nottingham City Council echoed those sentiments, stating, “This is a deeply tragic loss. We will be working closely with authorities to fully understand the incident, and we emphasize the severe hazards that open bodies of water can pose.”
