A small French village has been left devastated after the shocking killing of Karen Carter, a 65-year-old British woman, outside her home in what authorities are calling a “frenzied attack.” French police have launched an urgent search for the person responsible.
Ms. Carter, a married mother of four, was found late Tuesday evening outside her property in Trémolat, near Bordeaux, where she ran two guesthouses popular with British tourists. According to investigators, she suffered multiple stab wounds to her chest, groin, limbs, and arms — injuries described as “deep” and indicative of extreme violence. A criminal investigation is now underway.
A male friend, who had spent the evening with her at a local café-bar, reportedly discovered her collapsed and bleeding near her vehicle just ten minutes after she returned home. Despite administering first aid and calling emergency services at 10:17 p.m., medics found her in cardio-respiratory arrest. She could not be revived and died at the scene.
Prosecutor Sylvie Martins-Guedes confirmed an enquiry into voluntary homicide has been opened. No suspects have been named, and robbery remains one possible motive. The murder weapon is yet to be recovered.
Tributes from friends and locals describe Ms. Carter as “delightful and full of energy.” A member of the women’s football team “Les Reines du Foot,” she had recently participated in the Grandma’s World Cup in South Africa. Her teammates mourned her loss, writing: “Karen, our Queen of Football, leaves a great void in our hearts.”
Ms. Carter also ran a lifestyle blog and frequently welcomed guests to her countryside cottages. Her message to visitors — encouraging them to relax into the “slow lifestyle of the French community” — now serves as a haunting reminder of the peace shattered in Trémolat.
Residents of the quiet village are reeling, locking their doors and expressing disbelief. “Nobody can understand how this could happen here,” one local said.
The police investigation continues, with all possible leads being explored.
